After reading 5 books and other random web advice on potty training, I was not only ready, but excited to begin the potty training adventure with Tyler. I had a plan and a two year old who was unusually excited about his new potty seat.
I bought some training undies, Pull-Ups, a little blue potty seat (which Tyler was SOOO excited about), fun juice boxes, and M&M's.
The potty seat was ordered online and arrived in the mail. When it came, Tyler danced around singing, "Potty seat, potty seat, potty seat!" I hid it in my closet because I was worried that his enthusiasm would wear off before I was ready to begin (I hadn't finished reading my large stack of books yet). He found it and pulled it out to sit on. He would come in my closet looking for it, just so he could sit down and practice. When I bought his juice at the store I told him it was for drinking after he used his potty seat. When we got home from the grocery store, he stood in his bathroom and cried for the potty seat so he could use it and have his juice.
Teaching Teddy how to go potty on the potty seat
Today was the day. Today was difficult. My plans failed and I suddenly felt like none of the books I read were at all helpful.
The plan was to visit the potty every 15 minutes. Tyler would have an accident every 10 minutes. New plan...visit the potty every 10 minutes. Tyler would sit on the potty seat with no results, and then go in his pants a few minutes later. I was out of cute little underwear within an hour. I guess I need a bigger stock. We moved on to the Pull-Ups. This was much nicer when accidents occurred, but I felt like I was throwing away diapers every few minutes.
Then Tyler got tired of visiting the potty so frequently. He no longer thought it was a fun place to be. He threw himself to the ground and cried at any mention of the potty seat. "But Tyler, you can have a treat if you go potty on your potty seat!" "NO TREAT, NO TREAT!" Oh no, I couldn't even bribe him anymore. I was a failure.
We tried once more before the nap, and all of a sudden TYLER WENT POTTY ON THE POTTY SEAT! I danced around and clapped and acted as silly as I possibly could. Tyler got a treat and called Daddy to share the good news. Then he wanted to "do it again." It was a great way to end the crazy morning.
During his nap I spoke with my mom. She said I should not expect him to be dry, but simply to go when he's sitting on his little seat. One thing at a time. That seemed much more sensible to me. Why did I bother with reading all those books. I could have just had my mom tell me how it's done. I had also been giving him extra liquid all morning so he would have more opportunities to practice going. This turned out to be more opportunities for me to change wet pants. My wise mom thought the extra drinks were a bad idea.
After his nap there were no more extra drinks. Ironically, there were no more accidents in the pants either. Tyler kept his same dry Pull-Up on all the way until bedtime.
The moral of Day 1: Nana knows best.
Guess who's babysitting tomorrow while I run errands? Maybe I'll come home and he will be all potty trained for me!

I'm so glad you are blogging about this. Cole and I will be trying this by the end of the summer and I am really nervous about not having any success. Thank you friend. I can't wait to see what happens on Day 2.
Wow, I'm impressed you read 5 books. I kind of just flew by the seat of my pants... so to speak ; )
Good luck with day 2!!
I am so glad the afternoon went better!! Way to go Nana for having such good advice!!
Well let us hope that the potty training will be quick. If your mom is free later in the year, I can drop Jazzy by for some training. :)
oh, michelle, that made me chuckle. so glad you called your mom. :) i hope she also reassured you that you are the very best mom for your sweet boy--God gave him specifically to you. :)
i miss his sweet face in my nursery.
how's the house stuff going?
Michelle,
Hang in there. The first few days are the most frustrating...but eventually it will click with Tyler. You have so much patience, and it will become more relaxed as the days go on. Trust me, he won't be going to kindergarten in diapers.
love ya,
grandma
Boy was this funny, but of course I was rooting for success. It was just so cute, esp. how Teddy is wearing the new undies in one of the pictures! And the thought of a 2 y.o. insisting "No treat!" is a foreign one to me. Best wishes for peeing on command. I heard in other countries they often associate it with a whistle and the child's body easily goes when they hear the whistle tweet.
