Making Baby Food

Another thing on my list of stuff to accomplish this year, was to attempt making my own baby food. It is supposed to be much cheaper, so I figured I could at least try it out. I bought a huge butternut squash, baked it, pureed it, strained it, and froze it in ice cube trays. Voila, my own baby food! It makes me feel like such a good little mommy. Of course, I have to admit, it wasn't quite as easy as it sounds...

I was supposed to bake it on a cookie sheet, which I did. The only problem is that my cookie sheets don't have edges. While it was baking, juices started running out the side and off the pan. I figured it was mostly water and didn't think much of it. So, a couple days later, I turn the oven on to heat up a casserole I had just made. It was all preheated and time to put the food in, but I was busy with Tyler so I asked Todd to do it. Todd tells me there are enormous black blobs taking over the oven. I thought he was either joking or exaggerating, so I go to look. Oh my! The squash drips had really grown into these big puffy black things! It was very scary looking. Todd came to the rescue with his giant grill spatula and scraped them out, but now the house smells like burnt squash when you turn the oven on.

Then there was the problem with the blender. I never really use my blender, and I'm all excited to put it to use for such a noble purpose of making my baby's food. I put all the squash in and hit the button. Instead of watching the squash dissolve into a nice puree, it doesn't move, and I hear an awful, strange noise from the blender. How could it be broken if I've only ever used it a few times? Todd came to the rescue again. Good thing he was there or I would have been in tears over the whole experience. He took the blender apart and put it back together, and it worked! Yay Todd! It was apparently put together poorly the last time it was washed. I could still make my pureed squash!

It all turned out in the end. I'm sure it will be easier every time I try it. I will just have to make sure I do it when Todd's around in case there are any more mishaps.

Now I can go on to the next thing I wanted to accomplish for the year...setting up the playroom. This involves painting walls and cleaning out closets. It's not going to be easy, but I know it will be great when it's finished. I'll keep you posted.

So glad you are blogging. An a tip for the squash. I did mine, cut in half, cut side down in a pyrex dish with one inch of water. Then you just scoop out the flesh. I use some of the cookign water in the blender to get the right consistancy.

My wonderful daughter...I’ll bet 90% of ovens across America have those very same black blobs on the bottom of their ovens (or have had at some time). I laugh at some of the silly things I did along the way in order to get the housewife and mommy thing down, and I’m STILL learning.

What a great mommy you are and I am so proud of you! I have no doubt that you will not only accomplish all of your 2008 goals, but you will do them (or learn to do them) exceedingly well. Our little Tyler is blessed indeed.

Your mom's post is so sweet.

I thought I'd also tell you that I didn't strain any of Caroline's baby food. I just blended it really well (peas and green beans need to most blending).

I tried straining peas once and just got pea juice, (made a huge mess and was almost in tears like you) so then I asked my two friends that made baby food and they didn't strain their's either.

Sorry to dole out uninvited advice.

Also, I don't know if you keep up with my blog, but I'm very proud of my baby food picture in this post... http://worldofwelch.blogspot.com/2007/09/baby-food-machine.html
