Bluebonnets 2011

I have always wanted to get pictures of my kids in the Bluebonnet fields. It just seems like one of those things everyone should do when they live in Texas.

This year I was determined to get there. I had heard from friends that Brenham was a good place to go. I would have to venture there without Todd if we were going to be able to tour the Bluebell Creamery while we were there. They aren't open on weekends, and that is the only time Todd would be able to go. My parents were excited to come along on a weekday, so we packed up the kids with big dreams of Bluebonnet fields and beautiful pictures.

Little did I know that this was not the best year for Bluebonnets. There wasn't enough rain and the fields were too dry. When we arrived in Brenham, there were nothing nothing but a few dry little flowers here and there. It didn't look like the pictures I had always seen. Still, since we had driven all this way for pictures, we took some anyway. A cute baby in a field makes a nice picture, with or without Bluebonnets. Tyler was not in the mood to sit still and have his picture made, but we got a lot of pretty Allie pictures!

Ooooh, pretty flower!

Ooooooooh!

"Where are all of the flowers?"

Next, we headed to the little airport for lunch. I heard that there was a cute little diner there where the waitresses wear poodle skirts like the old days. It was a beautiful day with blue skies and sunshine. We enjoyed our little drive through the countryside. The diner was ok, but not great. It was funny though, because they took us right to a table that had a reserved sign sitting on it. We felt very important. It was as if they had been waiting for our arrival.

After filling up on yummy hamburgers we went to Bluebell for a tour and dessert. Before heading in, we had to take pictures with some pretty flowers and, of course, the cow.

"When do we get to eat ice cream?"

By the time we were finished with the tour, the kids were getting pretty tired and cranky. We were ready to head home. On the way back, my dad spotted a field with some Bluebonnets on the side of the highway. We decided to turn around and try to get a few pictures. That was the whole reason for the trip, after all.

There were a lot more flowers in this field, but the sun was high in the sky and the kids were no longer in picture taking kinds of moods. We did manage to get some good ones, but not a lot.

It was a fun little day trip, but I will definitely have to go back and try the pictures again when it's not a drought season.
